A Day at the Zoo

I am counting children.
Screaming children.
There’s a little boy with a Tinkerbell lunch box.
“I like her.”

Mothers are scolding little boys.
Three number nine jerseys:
Reichmouth, Hamm, McArthur
And all I can think about is “Revolution No. 9.”

There are emo kids everywhere.
A bored teenaged girl is jutting out her hip while she texts
And makes a point not to look at the baby giraffe.
“I don’t need to be this close to any live animals right now.”

Flicking off flies
All the animals look depressed.
It just started raining.
It wasn’t supposed to rain today.

“Stick out your tongue.”
T-shirt: “It’s all good when you’re THE BIG DUDE.”
There is a garbage can on a gorilla’s head and
I wonder if he’s sick of it.

I bought some animal crackers at the snack cart.
They make me thirsty and nostalgic.
We had to spend a day writing down things we overheard or observed and found interesting, and then had to take those things that we wrote down and assemble them somehow into a poem, trying not to add too many extra words.
